How to Find Peace in the Midst of Turbulent Times

Do you have a story like this?

One morning in April of 2012 I woke up and noticed that a large portion of our Craigslist ads had been deleted.  At the time Craigslist was our main source of income as we were selling furniture all over the country.

This was the equivalent of someone going to bed with $10,000 in the bank and then waking up and seeing $2,000.

We suspected a competitor was using software to repeatedly flag our ads and there was nothing we could do to keep them live. Immediately fear started to grip me as I wondered how we would ever survive this.

But God…..

He already had a plan in place for us to not only survive, but for our business to go above and beyond where it was before.  Just a short time after that I met Jim Cockrum and as a result our business exploded. If I hadn’t faced that challenge I wouldn’t have seen those new opportunities.

What are you facing today?

Maybe it’s the loss of a job or a decrease in hours/sales due to the coronavirus.

Maybe it’s a bad health report.

Maybe it’s a family challenge.

Whatever it is, I can tell you that it was not a surprise to God. He saw it coming and He has already planned a way of escape and I believe that you’re going to get through this and come out the other side stronger than ever before.

In the Amplified version Hebrews 13:5,6 says

“God Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. I will not, I will not, I will not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let you down (relax My hold on you)! Assuredly not!

So we take comfort and are encouraged and confidently and boldly say, The Lord is my Helper; I will not be seized with alarm. I will not fear or dread or be terrified. What can man do to me?”

These words above have been a tremendous source of peace and encouragement during turbulent times and I pray that they’ll do the same for you.

A Dose of Encouragement

If your email inbox looks like mine it’s full of emails from every restaurant, software provider, airline, bank, and retail store I’ve ever done business with on how they’re “closely monitoring” the COVID-19 situation.
Couple all those emails with the 24/7 coronavirus coverage on the news media and you can become depressed pretty quickly.

This message is not going to be like those.  Yay!!  Right?

Yes I’m washing my hands more and being cautious, but I don’t think you care about an update on every detail of how my family is handling all of this.  🙂

Rather I want to give you a dose of encouragement.

Here’s a short clip from this week’s podcast episode that I hope will uplift you…..

Have you ever said anything like this?……

“I only have 50 people on my email list”

“I only have $2,000 in sales this month”

“I only have 800 podcast downloads”

“I only have 500 followers on social media”

Only, Only, Only!!!

Get rid of the word “Only” from your vocabulary!

Imagine those 50 people on your email list showing up at your house eager to listen to you talk about your subject and spend time with YOU.

Wouldn’t you want to have your house all clean and tidy and something to serve them?

You wouldn’t look at the crowd and say “There’s only 50 of you.  Come back when you’re a group of 500.”

No!  You would invite them in and serve them.

Every single one of those 50 email subscribers or podcast listeners or social media followers or widget buyers are real people that you have a tremendous privilege to serve.  They look to YOU for what you have to offer so focus on them not the other 500 people that you don’t have.

Do you remember the famous quote from the movie “Field of Dreams?”….. “If you build it they will come.”
Well, in this instance it’s “If you serve them, they will come.”  Those 50 people will tell other people and your influence will grow.

Keep loving and serving those that have been entrusted to you and watch as more and more people hear about you and show up at your “house” as well looking for what you have to offer.

How to Get Over the Fear of Promoting Yourself or your Business

When I was a kid and it was time for my birthday I remember my mom asking me if I wanted to invite all of my friends over for a party.  The thought of everyone coming over and giving me presents and making the whole day all about made me uncomfortable.

As an adult I’m still the same way.  I’ve been to parties for friends and I love blessing people with gifts, but when it comes time for my birthday I’d rather celebrate quietly with my wife and and maybe close family.

Well when you have a business and/or a message that you’re trying to get out into the world that mindset or personality trait isn’t the best.

For a long time I was uncomfortable about “promoting myself”, but all the experts say that if you won’t promote yourself who will?
I’ve spoken with other business owners who have told me they struggle with this very issue.

Let me tell you how I got liberated from this mindset…..one day as I was walking around the neighborhood and praying I sensed the Lord telling me that this business and this message that He’s given me to share is not my message.  It’s His message and He’s only entrusted it to me as His messenger.

Whoa!!!  That right there made the difference for me!

You see I’m the guy that loves to help other people.  I’m a server by nature.  So I’ve never had a problem helping someone else, but when it came to me I was reluctant to “toot my own horn” for fear of looking like I was promoting myself.

So when I realized that it’s not about me and that I was just the messenger that changed the whole game.

Now I have no problem talking about this message of creating multiple streams of income and the other themes that I talk about because it’s not my message anyway.

You don’t have to be a person of faith to have this resonate with you.  Let’s look at it this way…..
That message you have matters and there is someone that needs to hear it.  If you can identify with what I’m saying then don’t think that you’re

promoting yourself.  Rather think about that person that needs that gift or that product or that service you have.  It’s your duty to promote that

message so that the people that need it can get it.  Do it for them.

Make sense?

So stop worrying about what others might think and don’t let the fear of “promoting yourself” stop you from getting your message out to a world that desperately needs it.

How to Get Over the Fear of Promoting Yourself or your Business – 030

In this episode Ryan talks about how he got over the fear of “promoting himself” and how when you have a business and/or message that the world needs to hear that it’s your responsibility to get the message out.

What is Your Low Hanging Fruit?

Have you ever asked these questions?

Where do I start?

What can I sell?

What knowledge do I have that people would pay me for?

There are diamonds right in your backyard and you might not know it.

Let me illustrate this with a short story….
A few years ago a friend of mine from church invited me to lunch to talk about selling on Amazon.  When I started digging into this question about what is your low hanging fruit I asked him about his current job.  He works for a steel company.  That intrigued me because I know virtually nothing about this industry so already right there I was thinking “I wonder if he has access to anything that he can sell that is unique?”

After a few minutes of chatting he disclosed that he has access to scrap steel at a very low price AND he has a friend that can help him turn that scrap steel into about anything he wants.

He mentioned sheet metal as an example.  So right there at the table I did some quick research on Amazon for sheet metal.

We found 12 inch by 12 inch sheets selling for a price that was enough for him to make a decent profit on.  That would be his low hanging fruit?  It was right underneath him and not something that he even thought about before.

But here’s what makes it unique and so special….I never ever would have thought “Hey, you know what? Let’s sell sheet metal on Amazon” and I bet most other Amazon sellers wouldn’t have either.  But there are customers right now on Amazon looking for that product.

So a niche that would have been a massive hurdle for me to get into (if I had even thought about it at all) was right underneath his nose.

So I ask you….What is your low hanging fruit?

Some questions to get you thinking are:

What’s right around you geographically?

Where do you work?

Where do your friends and family works?

What do you/they do at work? Do they make physical products?

If your business is creating an income from your knowledge and/or passion…what energizes you to talk about?  What questions are people already asking you?  What problem are you already solving for people?

That could be your low hanging fruit and the thing that makes you a nice living too!

What is your Low Hanging Fruit? – 029

In this episode Ryan answers these questions:

Where do I start?

What can I sell?

What knowledge do I have that people would pay me for?

The thing that is right underneath your nose (and don’t know it) can earn you a nice income!

The Secret to Taking the Limits Off your Business

Are you unknowingly putting a cap on your business growth?

In my most recent podcast episode I chat with my good friend and business partner Jenni Hunt and she said something that really stuck with me.  She said if you’re attempting to build a business on your own that you’re “capping your opportunity.”

What is she talking about?

Many businesses can be done solo.  Two of the three main online business models I frequently talk about could be done without ever talking to a single customer and for the most part with little human contact.
But is that the best way?  I think not and I would argue that by going it completely alone that you’re hindering your growth and hurting your wallet.  In 2014 I wrote a book called Private Label the Easy Way and a book is all that content would have ever been if it were not for meeting and getting to know Jenni Hunt.  She helped me see how that same content could be re-purposed and turned into a course and our partnership was born.  From there we created several streams of income all related to private label, but I know for sure none of it would have happened if I were flying solo.

Business is all about relationships and I know that I know that I know that my business would not be where it is today had I stayed home behind my computer.

My point is….get out and meet people doing the same thing you are.  Get out of your comfort zone.   As you meet people be on the lookout for those that have complimentary skills to yours or that you just “click” with.  You never know…a short “Hello” could turn into an amazing partnership.

The Best Investment You’ll Ever Make

What do you think the best investment you can make is?

Stocks?

Gold?

Bitcoin?

Life Insurance?

There is a lot of argument over the above, but I would submit that the absolute best investment you can make is in yourself.

Jim Rohn said “Poor people have big TVs.  Rich people have big libraries.”

I may never meet the world’s best business minds, but I can learn from them by reading or listening to their books, listening to their podcasts, taking their courses, and attending their events.

Every year people spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to receive a piece of paper that hangs on their wall that represents a degree they may never use.  And then they balk at spending $97 on a course that can make them back those hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Let’s take selling online as an example….I realize that with the internet there is a ton of free information out there.  So, yes, you could digest all the free info out there and start a business, but your time is super valuable.  It’s tedious work trying to wade through the plethora of content and then filtering through it for the best most accurate, up to date stuff.

And if you’re just starting out you might not even realize that the video you just watched is obsolete because Amazon changes so fast.

An investment into an online course or coaching program can save you time and money by short-cutting the process and helping you avoid mistakes that others make along the way

I’ve personally spent and continue to spend thousands of dollars every year on continuing education in the form of books, courses, mastermind groups, and live events.

I can guarantee you that my business would not be where it is today without investing in myself in this way.

My friend Dan Miller gave a keynote about this very topic at a conference I attended and did a whole podcast episode called “Your success is guaranteed – if you do this”  Here’s the link to it – https://www.48days.com/invest-in-yourself/

He suggests investing 3% of your income back into yourself and once you hit $50,000 per year to bump that number up to 5%.

So for example if you’re making $50,000 per year that would equate to $2500 per year or $208 per month.  For $2500 you could easily attend 1 or 2 conferences or book a coaching package with someone.

Dan says “See this as “investing” not “spending.”  If you purchase a 65″ TV you just spent that money, and your expense is depreciating every minute.  If you “invest” in yourself through a course that opens the door to a new opportunity, that investment can go up in value from the minute you begin.”

Shoot me an email (ryan@ryanreger.com) if you need some advice on where you might invest in yourself.  I’ve been doing this for a while and have gone through many courses and programs.  I’d be happy to help.
