The Secret Sauce in My Business

Last week I had the privilege of being interviewed on a podcast and one of the questions was “What is your Secret Sauce?”

Thankfully this question has no right or wrong answer 🙂

Here’s what I said –  “Pray as though everything depended on God.  Work as though everything depended on you.”  This is a quote from Saint Augustine and it’s been a favorite of mine for a long time.  The reason is because it defines how I run my business and even my life as a whole.

Can I be real with you for a moment?

I’ve been making a full time income online since 2008.  This means that I haven’t had a “real” job since then.  That’s a long time in the ever changing landscape of the internet.  My business looks NOTHING like it did in 2008.  I’ve had to pivot multiple times.

Pivoting can sound scary because it means changing and most of us don’t really like change especially when it comes to our financial security.

I can’t even begin to tell you the number of times that fear filled thoughts have attacked my mind.

Thoughts like “What if Amazon shuts down your account?”

“What if because of this Coronavirus you lose most of your customers?”

“What if your email list never grows?”

And the list goes on.

As my pastor says if fear is a bird you can’t stop it from flying over your head, but you can surely stop it from building a nest on your head.

With the whole world going through COVID-19 we’re inundated with fearful news, but we have a choice what we do with that news.

It’s easy to spout off a quote like the one above about work and praying, but for me this is how it plays out practically….

I pray then get to work on what I can control and do my best not to worry about what I can’t.

I get real with the Lord.  I might pray….

“Lord, I’m fearful about (insert situation).  I know that you are my provider so I cast the care of this over on to you.”  That is praying like it all depends on Him.  Then I might pray something like this “And, Lord, I ask for wisdom for this situation and that you direct my steps.”

Then I do whatever is required of me in that situation, but I’m doing it knowing that He is there with me and will give me favor and lead me in the right direction.
I’m working, but inviting Him into my work and allowing Him to lead me.

It’s not praying and then sitting back and eating potato chips and watching TV all day
hoping that He does it all.

It’s about praying and then getting to work, but your work is Spirit led and you’re trusting in Him to produce the results that you could never have done by relying on your own self effort.

Give to Him your little and He multiplies it.

His favor on you will put you at the right place at the right time.

I have experienced this numerous times over my life. Job openings, business partnerships, even the beginning of my relationship with my wife were the result of God putting me at the right place at the right time.

I could never have done that on my own.

That’s my secret sauce, folks, and unlike McDonald’s I’m happy share what’s in it 🙂
