Your Blueprint for Multiple Streams of Income

I’m for sure not a contractor, but I know that when they build a house they have a plan…a blueprint.  A different contractor can come along and follow that same blueprint and build the same house.

The process I have used to create over 16 different streams of income is totally duplicatable using the blueprint I’ve included in this email below.

So many entrepreneurs are just trying to make ends meet so they jump from one “low hanging fruit” to the next, duct taping the
strategies together.

My business partner Jenni Hunt and I bring a process to the madness and show that it is not only possible, but it is profitable, to build out multiple income streams around your interests, knowledge and/or passion.

Are Goals Even for Me?

Do you ever get frustrated with goals?

Over the years I’ve set goals and failed to meet them and then felt like setting goals wasn’t for me.  Can you relate to that?

I was encouraged to hear that I’m not the only one so I recorded a radio show with 3 of my friends that have 3 different approaches.

That’s right…there’s not just one way to do it.

The common thread that runs through each of the approaches is taking action.  Just do those daily tasks that move you forward and you’ll get to your goals anyway.

In 2020 I’m going to focus more on each quarter than the whole year.  Sometimes I get tripped up with setting only annual goaIs. I put those things off because I have the whole year to get it done.  Then November rolls around and I’m no closer to that goal than I was on January 1.

Does that sound familiar?

So here’s my new easy way approach with goals as I start 2020:

1) Focus on Quarter 1 (January – March)
2) Write something down
3) Take daily action
4) Review and revise
5) Be open to new opportunity

Rather than just say “Goals aren’t for me” and not doing them at all I’m going to set some goals (in pencil) for quarter 1.  I’m going to focus more on those daily tasks that I need to be doing because I know that it’s those tasks over and over that will move me forward.

I’m going to review my goals often and revise as needed.  And lastly I’m going to be open to new opportunities that might appear that could end up being a priority for that quarter.  My radio show is a great example of that.  Having my own radio show was certainly not one of my goals this past year.  It wasn’t even on my radar, but the opportunity came along and I was able to take advantage of it.

So be encouraged, my friend, and let’s make 2020 our best year yet!

We Just Want Things to Stay the Same But Get Better

Man wouldn’t this be great………for things to be able to stay the same but get better?

Change is not comfortable.  Staying in our comfort zone is, but as my friend Tyson Priest says in his new book Delta to Victor “Nothing good comes from comfort zones.”

People who change the world must get used to change.

What do you want your life/business to look like one year from now?  Chances are it will require some type of change to make it happen, but the good news is it might not require a massive change.

Usually what our like looks like on December 30 is the result of small choices we make throughout the year.  For example losing weight might require something as simple as just cutting out sugary drinks.  Adding a new income stream in your business might require outsourcing something you’re currently doing to free up your time.

If looking at the big result you need seems daunting then just focus on the small tasks and changes that will get you there.  Do that day after day and the big result will automatically happen.

18 Streams of Income?!?!

In a recent Facebook post my friend Jenni Hunt revealed that she had about 18 different streams of income.  It has got quite a bit of engagement as people are wondering how in the world she has done that.

When you hear this or when someone takes a screenshot of their sales and it’s some ungodly number you aren’t anywhere close to, you either are motivated because “if they can do it, so can I” or it deflates you and makes you feel like a failure for not performing to their level.

My encouragement to you is run your own race.  STOP comparing your business or even your life to someone else’s.  You don’t know their situation.  Maybe they don’t have a full time job like you do or maybe they’re not homeschooling 4 kids like you are.

Now I’m not saying that you should find excuses if your business is not where you want it to be or if you’re not putting in the work.  I’m saying stop looking at what others have and are doing and focus on you.  You can do this!!!

Now back to Jenni’s 18 different streams of income…..we’re not talking about a list that looks like this:

1) Selling on Amazon
2) Running a Daycare
3) Mowing lawns on the weekend
4) Hanging Christmas Lights for neighbors
5) Fitness Trainer

The above don’t complement each other at all.  While you could build out streams of income that have nothing to do with each other, it’s MUCH easier to take one skill or one theme and create multiple streams from that.

For example, let’s say you make the best paleo desserts (no dairy, no gluten, no sugar) that people who don’t necessarily eat that way wouldn’t even realize they don’t have all the other stuff in them.  Melane buys desserts like this from a local small business owner.  I’ve talked to this girl about how she could take her skill and create new streams of income from it.

What would you tell her?

Here are some of the ideas I gave her…

  1. Recipe Book
  2. Course on how to bake paleo desserts
  3. Blog
  4. Youtube Channel with instructional videos
  5. Private label her own paleo ingredients

This is a tiny list.  There are so many opportunities out there to take one skill or one piece of content and create multiple streams of income.

2020?!?!? Are you Kidding Me?

Just saying the year 2020 makes me think of the Jetsons cartoon that I used to watch as a kid, but where are all the flying cars and the robots that should be cleaning my house for me?  🙂

I may still have to load our dishwasher, but I’m excited about a new year.  It’s like a fresh start.

These last few weeks of the year are a perfect time to be thinking about what you want 2020 to look like.

Can I be honest with you?

I’ve read so many books about goal setting and achieving goals, being productive and focused yet I’ve failed so many times.

I find myself being busy, but not always on the most important work.  I work from home and I wouldn’t change that for anything, but having a toddler clamoring for my attention at all times makes it challenging to get things done. 

Over the years I’ve set goals and failed to meet them and then felt like setting goals wasn’t for me.

But I can go back into my journal and see where I’ve written down some pretty major things and I’m living out right now what I wrote in my journal.  So I’m not a complete failure.  🙂
I will always be a student of how to be more productive because time is precious and I think setting goals is important, but I no longer let it bother me if I fall short.  Because as I look back over the last 11 years of having my own business I can clearly see that I’ve progressed  Business is better than it was and I’m doing work that I love. 

So let me encourage you if you feel like you’ve been a failure at setting goals.  Your goals can be in pencil which means they can be revised.  The important thing is to write something down, take action on it, and review those goals often.  If 3 months down the road you need to change the goal do it and don’t feel bad about it.  Just keep moving forward daily on those actions that will move your business forward.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. Is it Really?

I love the holidays.  I love looking at the Christmas tree that my wife Melane has decorated (yes…already).

I love turning on my radio the day after Thanksgiving because that’s when my favorite radio station starts playing Christmas music.

I love listening to more Christmas music when I get dragged into a store with Melane.

Christmas, the holidays and especially Christmas music has the same joyful affect on many people as it does me, but not everyone has the same response.

According to this article from the Cleveland Clinic “how we react to early Christmas tunes has a lot to do with what our brains associate with the holiday season.  For people who’ve had great Christmases, full of celebration and good feelings when they were young, they’re going to be more welcoming of all the cues that go on with Christmas — and Christmas music is one of those really powerful cues.  On the flip side, if someone has difficult memories associated with the holidays, hearing music that is associated with this time of year may bring back some not-so-pleasant feelings.”

I pray about what to write in these emails.  I don’t outsource this task in my business.  To me this weekly email is important because it gives me a chance to speak encouragement into your life.  You might get beat down all week and I want this to always be a breath of fresh air, but my words alone have no affect.  That’s why I pray because I want His words to fill this page.  His words can change your life.  

For some of you this might be the first holiday season without a loved one.

You might be going through some hard stuff which is overshadowing the holidays and making them seem less than joyful.

The Lord wants you to know that He sees what you’re going through, He loves you and He’s right there with you.  He’s your loving Heavenly Father and He wants you to enjoy this Holiday season.

I’m a big believer in the power of prayer so how can I be praying for you?
I don’t just say this to fill up space in my email.  I have a Trello board with names of people who have written to me with prayer requests and I pray for these people by name.  I’d be honored to add you to this list.  Just hit reply and let me know how I can be praying for you.

One tip I’ll leave you with that has helped me a lot when circumstances are trying to get me down…be thankful.

Rather than focus on the difficult things be thankful for the good things in your life.  We all have a lot to be thankful for.

Fill in the Blank: ______ are the Fuel of Business

These are all good things and much needed in a successful business, but I believe the answer is……

RELATIONSHIPS

My friend and mentor Jim Cockrum said in his most recent podcast episode that “Business is fueled by relationships.
Relationships are fueled by connections and conversation.  The most
powerful connection and conversation you will ever have is in person.  The next best thing is the greatest communication tool we’ve ever been given which is the internet using voice, face and connecting that way. That’s
going to fuel your business.”

When I look at my business and all the streams of income I have I can point back to a relationship or person that helped create that or that I created with another person.

Selling physical products online can be traced back to a desire that was planted in me after reading Jim Cockrum’s book Silent Sales Machine.
In 2012 you might recall that I won an auction that Jim conducted on eBay.  As a result of that my wife and I were blessed to have lunch with him.  That lunch kicked off a friendship that exists to this day and has been
responsible for hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue (maybe more) on projects we have partnered on.
What fueled all that?  A relationship.

In 2014 I met Jenni Hunt at CES II, a conference for e-commerce sellers.  We became friends and that relationship lead to us creating Private Label the Easy Way (Proven Private Label) mentoring program for private label sellers and more recently a program called the Master Plan of Influence where we help people turn their passion into a stream of income.

The Amazon Legends group that I co-founded back in 2016 came about after meeting and getting to know my buddy Danny Stock.

In Jim’s recent episode he says that if you’ll connect with just 5 people per week using the internet (Skype or Zoom not email), phone or in person your business will explode.

Why?

Opportunities will present themselves.  If you’re talking to a customer you’ll learn their pain points and find new ways to serve them.
If you talk to a local business you might find out what’s holding them back from going to the next level.  Maybe you can help.

If you talk to a fellow e-commerce seller you’ll learn what’s working in their business right now.  Maybe you can implement that in your business.

It sounds so simple yet most people don’t do it.  In this age of text
messages and email it’s too easy to sit behind a computer and not make meaningful connections with people. 
Pretend it’s 1982 and meet someone for coffee or pick up the phone and call them and ask them this question I learned from Jim also…..

“What are you working on and how can I help?”

Or as my friend Brian Dixon says “What are you working through?”

This will get them talking about their current challenges and/or current projects and who knows you just might have the answer they’re looking for.  For sure, though, you’re building a relationship with that person and that’s priceless.

From Chaos to Clarity

Endless to do lists.

Social Media.

Shiny objects.

A crying toddler 🙂

All of these and more can contribute to chaos in our lives.  When things are chaotic we’re just surviving not thriving.     

My friend Mariane Renner, this week’s podcast guest and author of the book Chaos to Clarity says “Chaos is the biggest thief in our lives.  It robs us of our goals, our dreams, our true purpose, and of living the lives we were meant to live.”

When chaos is present we may be busy but we’re usually busy with distractions.

So how do we break the cycle of chaos?  Marianne says we need to get focused on our purpose.

We have to know our why.  When we have clarity of purpose we’ll be directed to the next right action and cut through the chaos.

Doing the next right action means we’re not busy with those distractions and we’ll be moving our business forward.
